External Hard Drive Lost it's formatting

Today I unplugged the usb connector of my 2tb Seagate External HDD from my computer and when I reconnected it later on, I discovered that the drive had lost it's formatting. What does this mean?

It had an NTFS format, but now I get a message saying that the drive doesn't have a format and it needs to be formatted. I haven't done that. How do I get my data back?
