Regardless of whether your data loss is related to hardware malfunction ( "physical problem" ) or file system corruption ("logical problem"), a good first step is to shut off the computer to prevent further data loss that might occur as a result of data being overwritten. Even allowing your operating system to perform the shut down can result in data loss so the best way to proceed is to simply pull the plug on the computer or to hold down the power button for as long as it takes for the computer to shut off (typically holding down your power button for 10 seconds or so will do the trick).

Ideally, your next step should be to remove the drive from your machine and to attempt recovering your data using another computer. If a second computer is not available, another alternative is to leave the drive in your pc but boot from a CD or DVD containing an operating system instead of booting normally. Windows based machines are not generally recommended for performing data recovery because the operating system writes to all drives it finds even when you haven’t explicitly asked it to do so.
